So I don't have class and the kid is in daycare so I was planning on paddling into the niqually delta area and fly fishing salmon and cutthroat. Got a few new flys today that I want to try out and I want to land my first fish in the yak. We did get 1 silver today on the carbon without the kayak. If anyone wants to meet up should be fishing from 930 to 4pm

Shoeman? U fish there before? If not be especially careful of the mud flats immediately out from the launch. If its low tide you'll have to paddle around them anyways. Even high tide might be a good idea to skirt the flats. Usually paddling across is more like poling across. Not a good thing for a Hobie driver.

Thanks. If I read the tide chart correctly for tommorrow the tide should be on its way in when I get there and I was thinking of coming in a little early when the tide is on its way out so I have a little Help on the way back.

your idea is probably best bet. get yourself around the corner and let the incoming push you up river, if you desire.. it can push you all the way to the i 5 bridge if you let it....

salmon university has an ok map for the area but pick up a top spot chart set. you wont regret it, the actual delta mouth can be very confusing... if you have a gps enabled fish finder use the hell oout of it too, and watch out for the nets. a lot of times, they arent taken out when they are supposed to be,.

oh, and watch out for the furbags following you upriver.

I have some higher end topo maps on my iPhone on an app. Oh and I won't be out there until 430 anymore as my wife only has class until 1pm so I will have to be off the water at 1230

Oh man, bummer dude. I've been fogged out around the same area pretty bad for 2-3 hours at a time. I have a super crappy gps on board that basically works only as a compass, but can get me to land good. If you can, get a small compass, And you can usually try and still fish somewhat close to or in sight of shore. I've been in that area about 9 times so far, and 3 of those times ran into the same situation. I'll be heading to the same launch tomorrow morning.

Not sure if I'll be launching out of Luhr Beach (Nisqually Reach) again this year, but if I do I'll give you a holler. I've spent quite a bit of time there and can show you how to get up in the Nis. There's a lot of jet sleds up and down the river right now, and then duck hunters starting in Oct. Make sure your aware of your surroundings.

Luhr Beach is a public launch and the best one for accessing the Nis by boat. Solo Point or the Ft. Lewis side of the river is where you need to have an access pass, but I'm active duty Air Force so I can use those areas.

I am thinking about the area right off of old pacific hwy... but I have thought it would be cool to float that river in a yak.  Have you done that before?

Rev,
sounds like you are talking about the old tank crossing off mounts road. Yes you'd need an access pass from Range Control on Fort Lewis side of JBLM.

Not sure i would want to do what you are proposing. Plenty of vandalism and out right theft in the parking area there. Add in some pretty rough boulder fields and some downright arrogant bankies and boaters, and you have a potential for physical (and possibly armed) conflict.

Safely, you can paddle up from the mouth to about the 2nd bend past the I 5 bridge. Just remember to watch out for the nets as i mentioned before.

Drifting the Nasty isn't actually that bad.  I've found the bankies and drifters on the Nooch tend to be bigger assholes.  Not many drift boats / kayaks / jet skis / sleds are on the Nasty, so most of the time people are like "oh cool, check it out".

Places like the Wynoochee, or even worse, the Cowlitz, are full off asshats.  Seems the more money you put into it (driftboat, jetsled) more likely you are to feel 'entitled' to YOUR river.

Then again, it could be because those are the easiest rivers for Seattle/Tacoma/Olympia people to get to, and after living in several different areas in the country and world, west of the Cascades definitely has the rudest.  (haven't been to Jersey or New York yet though)
