I drive a 2010 VW Sportwagen TDI.  For being a "compact" there's tons of interior space--when we were researching we found that there were more square inches of space than the "larger" Subaru outback.  No all wheel drive, however, but given that we don't regularly leave Seattle AWD wasn't worth the price in terms of mileage.

We get about 28/40 mpg, but have to pay the premium price for diesel.  It'd be an awesome car if you had a reasonably long freeway commute.  Problem is that the model has only been available since 2009 and the diesels really hold their value.  One of the gas engine versions would probably be a lot closer to your price range.

Nothing says manly like a 98 Isuzu Amigo. And, if you are a Hobie owner and you get it stuck on the sand, Hobie sends Morgan Promnitz and Regional Team Members (Zee in my case) to push you out.  At least they did every time I got mine stuck.  Talk about customer service.

Craig, I hate to admit fear, but that thing scares me a little.

I would much rather be up a creek without a paddle than down one.

How so, it has airbags, seatbelts, and a little Great White, Cinderella, and Dokken for the stereo :headbang:. The manual transmission keeps me awake, too. What else do you need.  ;D It also gets over 20 (sometimes) with 2 people and towing a trailer with their yaks and gear.

Had three outbacks on the roof of my 99 accord the other day. Don't recommend that one...

I'll pile on with the Subaru group. Our 2002 wagon is the best all-around vehicle I've owned. That said, I usually go with my extended cab Ford Ranger (with a contractor rack). The back is a lot easier to clean up.

I was just looking for that photo, Spot!

I definitely need something different now that the rains are back

I can't get anywhere with a car that has an oil pan just under 3 inches from the tarmac, but it sure is fun to drive.

I'm actually thinking of some older Audi's (4000 or 5000s), VW QSW, or Westy...

I haul my Outback around on top of my Prius. Works great but that's all I can get up there without caving in the flimsy roof.
If I didn't have a 35 mile commute I would get a Suburu. The new Forrester and Outbacks are phenomenal vehicles. Fuel efficiency isn't too bad for what you're getting in power and you can maneuver 2 kayaks on top with some creative stacking.
Keep us posted on what you end up going with!
