The correct usage for "pig" is a big bass.  Calling other fish "a pig" is considered offensive by some bass anglers.  And me.   :D
The fish bite twice a day - just before we get here and right after we leave.

The fortunate part about living near the saltwater is being able to catch fish that actually classify as a pig and not having to talk one's self into believing that a 6 pound fish is the apex of fishing achievement. [emoji1]

Wow, I can offend bass anglers just by calling other fish pigs.  Good to know.

It's amazing how much fire this quip drew.

Now I'm just waiting for bsteves to say something that causes one of our Southern US brothers to hop on the forum and brand him with a less than favorable label....

FG - When I was doing research about nautical superstition I read on many reputable websites that the word "Pig" is a no no whilst at sea due to the bad luck it can bring on.

I thought all you old salts kept up to speed on such things!   ;D

As an aside - on the whole banana thing...  I kept reading about fishermen who where afraid of them on boats, so I proved it to be a farce by taking bananas on boats and catching fish.  I filed it away as garbage and thought no more about it, other than that bananas are a nutritious energy booster.

I took a guided trip last week, and without thinking about it, brought a bunch of bananas for the guys on the trip.  The guide found them and was pissed. He threw them out on the bank...  I felt kinda bad, but at the same time was almost embarrassed for him.  I have a new goal.  Catch a steelhead on a piece of banana.

Back on topic -  When people say "cookie cutter coho"  what does this mean?
I would much rather be up a creek without a paddle than down one.

I think the banana thing is more of general bad luck on the water, rather than just bad luck fishing.
Things like bad weather, getting lost, running aground, sinking, conked motor, prop nut fell off, etc...

I too have taken bananas on my kayak with reasonable success still catching fish, and making it home safe.  8)

When people say "cookie cutter coho"  what does this mean?

Most similar to other coho in size and shape; as if someone used a cookie cutter to stamp out delicious little coho clones. One at the statistical peak of the bell curve. In my mind that's about 8-10 lbs and bright silver.

Another phrase that comes to mind:
"Boot" or "old boot" is referring to a dark colored fish. Many times they are a Tule and don't have to travel far to spawn and are further along in the decaying process. May also be referred to as a "smoker" because the quality of meat is not usually as good as a bright fish.
My wife thinks fishing is merely guys wandering around like idiots swinging sticks in the air. Many of my trips prove how smart she really is.

Maytagged: meaning getting held down by the churning surf when you huli if memory serves.

Or that could mean that something was so well constructed or maintained so meticulously that you kept it out of the shop for too long and can't believe it just failed. "How could my Avet just seize like that, I thought I had that baby maytagged."

"Maytagged"---- the act of getting thrown in the washer/dryer and tumbling like a SOB.

Or for some---- surf landing  ::)
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Yard Sale: Gear floating around in the waves and heading for the horizon because you failed to attach it to your kayak and you got maytagged.
