option #2 - I think it is sufficient to give people the idea of where the channel is, and the major point that it extends all the way to the buoy, and not just to the north and south points.

Option #2 actually cuts off the dropoff where many people fished in years past.  There is no need to extend the boundary to the south of the line from the buoy to the hole.  All boats are supposed to exit to the ocean while passing to the right (north) of the red buoy.

Guys, I'm going to be blunt here.  In years past I have heard complaints of people fishing in the channel.  I'd rather craft the rules such that things are crystal clear and I don't need to hear any complaints.

I totally, 100% get that.  At the same time, though, we can't concern ourselves with every last grain of sand in someone's vagina.  Some PB's will whine about us (or deliberately try to wake us, as one charter boat seemed to do last year) no matter where we are, just like some drivers complain about bicyclists no matter how hard they try to courteous and stay out of the way.

I don't think it requires closing the water to our purposes, but if you see a charter coming out in the early AM (fishing vs whale watching) and you find yourself anywhere directly north of the bell, it is courteous to move E or W.

Almost all of the fishing charters are going to head for the bell and set a course dead north.

Whale watch tours will head to the bell and go any direction a whale has reportedly been sighted.

You can tell a fishing charter from a whale watch charter by the number of people on board/on deck. Fishing charters have around a dozen, whalers have around 20 usually.

If you see a whale watcher charter with 20 people on the bow or a zodiac or two putt putting at a slow clip north or south towards your position they are likely following a whale(s) and you should reel up and move.

Also I was relayed stories of our guys staging and clogging up the ramp when sport boats were launching. When asked to kindly move or launch someone in our crew last year said something to the effect of "f@ck you, I paid my $2, same as you did." This type of interaction with locals does not endear NWKA to the community.

Please try to stage kayaks in the parking area and launch off of the eastern half of the ramp as it is seldom used by power craft.

I was referring to other contestants, not the PB's.   :-\

The charter did not try to deliberately wake anyone! They went out to dump carcasses, and then went back in.

If you feel wake from a large vessel is more than you can handle in the ocean then you should not be fishing in the salt.

Sport boats and charters have no obligation to slow and reduce their wake anywhere other than harbors and other posted areas. If one does slow for you he is being nice.

Allowing fishing in the channel is dangerous for one person and an extreme hazard if 20 kayaks are doing so. DO NOT FISH THE CHANNEL! We will be inviting an accident at worst or pissed off locals as a best possible outcome.

Gonna have to agree with Bill... again.  If wakes bother you, keep your kayaking limited to those lakes with speed and/or motor use restrictions.

Umm, I was probably 500 yards from that charter boat.  I seemed to recall some annoyed radio chatter, and it seemed to me they thought he was coming deliberatly close.  Maybe I'm mis-remembering.  Regardless, whatever wakes I was exposed to didn't bother me, and I certainly never complained out them.

Oh no, I'm sure there was annoyed chatter, but I'm pretty sure wake is harmless  :)

I agree with not fishing the channel, but disagree about the waking. I was there when one of the charters changed course & set a heading NE directly toward some yak fishers after dumping his wastes. He picked up speed & at less than 50 yards turned hard to create a wake. No real danger, but the guy was a rude a$$hole in my book. At the time, I would have been happy to tell him that to his face. I wasn't fishing but trying to transect the channel as fast as possible. I believe in courtesy, but human powered craft have the right of way. That's the law. BTW, maybe if one of our bunch blocks the ramp, then cusses someone who speaks to them about it, we should jump 'm & wash their mouth out with soap.  ;)

Crowding the channel and fishing directly out of the hole will only piss off more power boats.
Fly big high flags, be as visible as possible, keep the channel clear and stay out of the way of power boats.

Give them tons of room and expect that they won't give you any.

Whatever scenario keeps contestants from fishing in the channel but gives us the most area to fish is the best option imo
