Guess I'll throw in here a "Thanks" for the fishing out there. Didn't have a very productive weekend... got to the launch late on Saturday, got a double rockfish on my first drop, and then nothing the rest of the day. We could (edit: couldn't) hold on the north side of the rock where the rockfish seemed to be schooled up; the wind was hitting the face of the rock and producing a serious chop, and sending us around the side every time. My wife had a bite in a spot that has produced cabezon before but we couldn't get anything to stick. Had fun fishing with Justin, that's me and my wife in the tandem in the photo above. A huge thanks to Justin for contributing to our dinner as well!!!  :banjo:

Sunday we were at the launch by 6am, but as everyone has stated the fog was an issue. I had forgotten my compass (sweet move) and I don't have a GPS, so I was just going to stick right by the cape where I'd seen a few fish caught the day before, but CrabbyCabby was kind enough to let us fish with him and piggyback off his nav capabilities. It was much rougher and windier than expected, and the fog was really something. My wife caught a just-barely-undersized cabezon and that was the only action we got.

Hopefully next time will be a better weekend for us, but we got on the water, kept safe, and ate fish tacos last night, so life is good. Nice to meet ya'll.

Saturday was a gorgeous day.
My buddy caught his first ocean salmon. 15# Chinook.

Tell us more!  How far out?  How deep was he running his gear?   ;D

My buddy caught his first ocean salmon. 15# Chinook.

My luck was a little less than pleasing; not even a bump from the local fishes. I lost a crab pot, and got in a yelling match with a guy insistent on burying his 4wd suburban in front of me - twice.

The first time the man wagon came hurtling in front of everyone else about running over half a dozen tourists, t-boned the ramp and high centered. He had to be winched out, but then he went directly back out on the beach (???). He  straight away cut me off in line (probably thinking I'd get stuck) cranked the tires and spun out burying the thing to the running boards. While he was digging out is when I ensued letting him know what I felt about his manors, intelligence, pedigree, etc. It took me an extra 45 minutes to get off the beach due to his stupidity. Once he was clear, I revved my little four-banger roller-skate to the moon, got a running start, and plowed through the furrows he dug up. Took me one try and about 30 seconds. 100's cheered me on and gave the guy a stricter railing than what i'd earlier delivered. Luckily the local sheriff agreed with my assessment of the moron and gifted the chap a citation for his wondrous driving skills and pissing off everyone else wanting to go home. However, I'm not sure what the citation was for.

Still, it was a gorgeous day and I can't wait until next time.
(fyi - crab pot is attached to a new white boat bumper, white line, and the strangest pot I've ever bought on clearance. Shaped like a doghouse. Dropped in 35 ft of water halfway and SE to the rock. It's a very unlucky pot. If you find it, can I have the bumper back?)

There was some soft sand out there - glad to hear you made it out just fine. Pretty much every weekend if the sand is really soft like that at the end you get constant idiots getting stuck. Going back down to the sand after cleaning our catch Saturday there was one guy stuck trying to head out, and an old ford tempo right in front of us decided he should probably just go around: immediately stuck to the axles. I went around everyone, because I know the area and my vehicle in the sand, but man, it was a mess!

We were directly south of the rock about a mile when he picked up the nook. I asked him how deep and he replied "Not sure, I let it freespool for about 10 seconds; does that help?"... No... The maddening thing is that he hooked up again immediately after filling out his tag. Lucky for him the thing spit the hook. Otherwise I would have pushed him in the ocean for not sharing. (joke)

He was using a chartreuse flasher and brined cut-plug herring (as instructed by the one and only Mark Veary); no additional sauce. I was really stoked for him and his excitement made the whole trip worth it. My buddy usually puts more food into the ocean than he takes out, so it was great to see him finally get rewarded for his years of chumming.

I have a pic I tried to download last night, but the filesize was too large and my home computer doesn't have any graphic software. Now that I'm at work and have Photoshop, I don't have the pics. Doh!
My wife thinks fishing is merely guys wandering around like idiots swinging sticks in the air. Many of my trips prove how smart she really is.

I was grumpy about only boating 2 fish, but my wife made me smile and take a picture.  :P

2nd pic shows the fog from Sunday. Most of the morning I couldn't see the cape from the rock, or vice versa.

It was lumpy out Sunday. I didn't take my seasick meds as early as I usually do and was feeling pretty green for the first  hour or so. I tried to troll around the rock for a while and then switched over to bottom fish. It was a bit slow but Justin pointed us toward the fish. His karma was rewarded with a nice cabbie.

The fight took so long I gave up waiting for the fish to come up and got back to fishing :)

Sam with a cabbie

Langcod with a fish so small I can't make out what it is.

He was also kind enough to show us how to paddle board an outback in the ocean. His reentry was successful on the first attempt. Not bad.

Good fishing with you boys on Sunday.

I did find a sweet spot with a lot of fish around.  I was able to mark to spot on the GPS and ended up taking 4 or 5 people out to the hot spot.  I think most people caught fish there.

You're getting a bit salty. You did the same thing at ORC for us too. Bass and catfishing must translate to the Ocean pretty good  ;D

Thanks for sharing the photos, Noah - it was a great time out there on Sunday, even with the lumpy, foggy conditions.

Like Noah, was feeling a bit queasy for the first hour - it didn't help that my trolling diver wasn't diving to start out, requiring me to turn it around ... twice!  Things started feeling much better in nice fashion once I got into a few fish.  My first ever rockfish and cabezon on this trip - nothing of size, but still a lot of fun.   :)

The surf launch and landing were pretty much what I'd expected with the light surf conditions - though I did learn a lesson, enjoying a nice quick dunk under the oasis when I hopped off on the wrong side, allowing the next wave to send the kayak over me!!!

Also, Justin, if you get the chance, do watch/learn from these guys at the cleaning station!  I may have jumped in too soon with my rockfish, after getting some quick instruction from Noah - it isn't pretty, but should still hit the spot...  Saw some great looking fillets produced by Noah, Sherminator, and Younggun.

Thanks again all - really appreciate all the advice going out through the surf for the first time!

A little slow in coming but here is my launch/landing video.

A huli would have made it a little more exciting.
