Hello,

I am arriving in Garibaldi Friday evening Oct 9th. Fishing Oct 10 from 7 am to Noonish (incoming tide). I am staying in Garibaldi at Harborview right at the marina.

My plan is to fish for salmon, drop a crap pot, go after some other types of fish if salmon are not cooperating or I limit early.

I have caught salmon from my kayak in the Columbia, but have never been in the ocean or a bay or anywhere near saltwater before. So, I am new to the area as far as fishing from a kayak goes.

Anyone planning on being around on that weekend that might want to go fishing?

Any advice on what types of bait to bring, good spots or anything? I am guessing trolling herring for salmon, but am bringing spinners also just in case. I have shad for the crabs but am not sure what to bring for rockfish (I have never fished for those).

Thank you!

tknight, that is pretty convenient staying right there by the boat launch.
I am no expert on salmon, but if you do want a pretty sure thing that's lots of fun in Tillamook Bay, I would recommend hitting the south jetty for awhile to pester the bay crappie (rockfish). These rockfish are small but taking them on with very light tackle is a blast. Use the Gulp! minnow, available at Barview store, on a 1/4oz jig and stay close to the rocks. 50 fish days are not uncommon. The cool thing too is that the crabbing is good just a little farther off the rocks and you can catch your crab bait (7 black rockfish daily limit). Makes for good entertainment.
My favorite time is the last couple hours of the outgoing tide for the rockfish, continue through the beginning of the incoming and ride the tide back to the harbor.

Hi tknight,

There is a chance I might be there on Oct 10th or 11th but will keep you updated.  For rockfish I usually use the Zoom Fluke 4 inch baby bass or smoking shad on an ultra light 7 foot rod. As Minnowmagnet mentioned, those Gulp! minnows are very effective (just hard to find them around Portland).  Jigheads are 1/4 - 1/2 oz, as long as it can descend down to the bottom.

Thank you all very much! I am going to order some of those Gulp minnows! I really appreciate the time y'all took to help me out. I am very new to kayak fishing but racking up the fish species as fast as I can. I love it! It was just a couple weeks ago that I got my first chinook in the kayak on the Columbia.

Walleye, bass, shad, chinook, trout... Now on to the bay... rock fish things (weird prickly things), more salmon, crabs and who knows what else. I swear this is the most fun I have had in years even though half the time I am clueless. Next year kokanee, lings, more rock fish, more salmon..

After a lifetime of bank fishing, trolling is something I am still getting the hang of but I so enjoy the challenges of the kayak. It's taken my fishing addiction to a whole new level.

Oh I almost forgot to mention, the sun most likely won't rise before 6 am so it will still be dark out.  Make sure your kayak have some sort of light which is required by coast guard.

The tides for the 10th of October require a 4:30-5am drop in that's awful early for a first time in the bay yaking around the jetty. JMHO following weekend looks better.

I do have a light for the yak. I have my PFD and a whistle. Do I need any other safety gear?

As far as the tides go, I wish I could pick a different weekend but I am locked in to Oct 10 and 11.

Is there a different section of the bay that may be a little less risky for the tides that weekend? I am definitely going to try the jetty area but you have a point about the tides.

I really don't want to go exploring the open ocean accidentally.

Try ghost hole. Launch at garibaldi at 8:00 and drift upstream with the tide then back with the tide. Super easy.

I second that about the Ghost Hole. If you need to launch during the incoming just go there and catch a salmon.
Also, the rockfish/crab area on the map I posted has less current than many parts of the bay and you can hang out there without feeling like you will get swept out to sea. Getting there during an incoming tide would be brutally slow, if possible at all, however.
