A big Thank You to all of the sponsors who supported this event, to Bettye Ramirez for coming down and talking about C.A.S.A. and to all of the competitors who came down.

$510 was raised between entry fees and donations for local charities.

Whenever I think of Eastern Oregon, I think of storms.  It seems that every trip I've made there has been punctuated by crazy winds and drawn out thunder storms.  It's almost as though the charged beauty, abundant wildlife and bountiful waters require a cyclical correction to maintain balance.  Whatever the reason, I've come to look forward to them.

I'll be honest, I was kind of bummed that I'd be missing the Washington Halibut opener but as soon as I rolled into Huntington, I knew it was going to be a good weekend.  If you're ever over that way, stop by Howell's Café across from the park.  It's not much to look at but the food was great and they're generous with the portions.

Spring Recreation Site was the perfect venue for BCS central.  Lots of well appointed camp sites.  Clean restrooms and potable water, where the deer wander thru camp all day and an epic view of Brownlee Reservoir.

The crappie bite was non-stop and punctuated by the occasional catfish or bass.  I was picking up crappie on everything from micro jigs to bass grubs to crankbaits.  It seemed that every point, cove and slide held fish.  I wish I knew what the giant marks were in the middle of the reservoir (and what would make them bite)!

Snake River Rd follows the reservoir for about 30 miles and while there were lots of boats taking advantage of the awesome fishing, we never had to share a spot.

If you ever get a chance to fish this epic impoundment, jump at it!

In a nutshell, it was a great contest with an awesome crew, generous prizes and a venue beyond compare.  Excellent job Jed!  Thanks so much for putting it on!!!

Had a blast fishing this past weekend at the 1st annual Brownlee Crappie Shootout Kayak Tournament! Managed to get a second place finish and got some pretty sweet prizes! Had a great time camping and meeting new people. All in all it was a great weekend. Only downside was Saturday night a storm happened to come through and a tree fell onto my truck barely missing 3 of us who were standing in its path. Good thing they make insurance.

I agree that the Brownlee Crappie Shootout was great fun. I really used the tournament as an excuse to go camping with my wife, Mary, and my 4yr old granddaughter, Madison. They both had a great time, in no small part to Jed and his family. Madison is very shy, but by the end of the weekend, Jed's wife and kids had Madison out of her shell and laughing & playing. She went home and told her parents all about her new friends.

Jed also very kindly awarded Madison a couple of Lancer jigs and a small leader holder for catching her first fish. Of course, Madison's favorite item was the small carabiner on the leader holder - she didn't let it our of her sight the rest of the weekend. (Her dad made sure grandpa didn't get hold of the Lancer jigs.) Things like this are what make NWKA such a great group.

I had made reservations at Farewell Bend SP thinking the ladies would like it better than the more rustic conditions at Spring Rec campground. That was wrong. The company at Spring was way more friendly, the camp area pretty nice, and waterside much better. The waterfront at Farewell Bend was kid unfriendly. I have a nice toilet & hot water shower setup, so I didn't really need to be at a SP to have that. Next time, I will stay at Spring.

The water was (mostly) smooth, the crappies were easy to catch, the scenery was pretty nice, and the company excellent. What more can a man hope for?
