For clarification.  Official start time is 4:30AM!!!!!  Lines out at 5pm.  Need to be weighed/measured by 6pm...or in line to do so.

Say someone is done at 9 a.m. with a 100lb'r, are they waiting till 6 pm?  Many don't have a cooler large enough to keep it on ice long enough

If the results are based on length, could we possibly measure a filleted carcass? I know that's not ideal, but to me meat preservation comes first if I am going to harvest a fish. I'm one of those huge-ice-chest-not-having guys Martin is talking about.

As long as the fish is weighed and confirmed by 3 different witnesses, I don't see any reason for keeping the fish intact.  I'm going to look at a scale tomorrow and hopefully someone else can bring a backup.

Oh yeah,  maybe bring a metal detector...just in case someone try to slip a cannonball inside the fish.

Could a video of weight/ measurement of fish with a witness be a possible solution?

Unless someone shows up with a decent scale that enough of us says is good enough, we are going to go by length.  Length (to the quarter inch) witnessed by two people and picture and posted on to a thread I will start for derby update is sufficient.  .  If people have difficulties, the person catching the fish doesn't need to post it.  One of the witnesses can on their behalf though everyone should be registered.

If a photo is hard to get the whole length,  a short clear video panning the head to tail with measureing tape in place would work.  What might be fun is someone brought a two by four or something where we can mark the fish down on we go by length.

Example

Ryu Tsukada (posted by Kardinal_84)
36.75inches
Witness 1 (If possible to avoid issues, I shouldn't be one of the witnesses.  i.e try to find independent folks)
witness 2

I want to keep this fun and informal since there is no money involved from my perspective.

I will build a measuring stake and put it at a central location on the beach.

That would be awesome.  If possible something that we could put the head up against, then we measure to the FORK of the tail.  not tip/ends

Just heard back from Wilderness Way in soldotna. They will be providing a prize as well, more than likely a gift certificate. Btw, they have a PA for rent, 50$/day if anyone needs a boat.

I realized that measuring fish based on length is not always accurate method to use.  For instance the biggest butt I caught last year was 44lb when weighed but based on length it should have been over 50lb.  Last year many halibut were underweight and this contributed the  length to weight discrepancies.  Now, I couldn't care less who gets the biggest fish.  After all, this is fun event for me to get together and fish.  However,  I would want more accurate ways to measure and record...for personal reason.

I am going to shop for a scale today and hopefully buy one if it looks legit enough.  You are more than welcome to use it at the tournament.

See you guys on Saturday!
