Upnorthtex and I also decided to bah it as he has a sore shoulder, and I don't like the spin cycle anyways. We did plan B Nehalem  trolling for salmon had fun but bo love today, I was too prepared. We watched a PA roll on the way out and that's what made up my mind. Didn't catch who it was as they were at the waters edge when we rolled in. Hope you didn't loose much more then a little pride.

Thank you everyone for the kind words and advice, I just am kind of disappointed in myself for not launching, bummed because I was super stoked to get out there. But as you all have said, there's always next time

You're disappointed in yourself for...having made the correct assessment of conditions and a good decision ?

Sorry, that makes no damned sense at all.

That was me.
I have your what I can only assume is your Hydro Flask.
Found it out past the breakers.
It was entertaining coming back in as well.
I think at least three of us dumped.
I had a net and some bait retrieved. ;D
Not too bad though, 6 rockfish all at least 17" and a 22" cabbie.

It was good to see so many Kayakers yesterday.  I went in resigned to getting wet, lashed everything down etc, but wanted to gain experience and stretch my own limits.  Only got a little wet on way out.  Conditions were squirrely, clearly not what I expected.  Got three fat large Blacks and one Ling that was too short to keep.

Here is the question: could the conditions we saw be predicted looking at magicseaweed, see screen shot?  I don’t remember who but one of you at waters edge said this was what he expected but I didn’t quite understand the explanation.

Why I don't go to Depoe Bay: 3:00 am wake up vs 4:00 wake up!  I will make it out there yet.

I agree. Everyone should go to Depoe Bay. The fishing's way better.  >:D

The primary and secondary swell were about the same height and period but different directions. That makes for "lumpy" conditions or what I have heard defined as "confused" swell.  Then the south wind amplifies the swell and cape Kiwanda head  is no longer protection of those waters.  So, I could see that as a challenging day for surf launch.  Good for you to practice, and give it a try!

The hydro flask is likely mine.  I lost a blue one going out first thing.

Here is the question: could the conditions we saw be predicted looking at magicseaweed, see screen shot?  I don’t remember who but one of you at waters edge said this was what he expected but I didn’t quite understand the explanation.

The reason the surf and swells were so bad is mostly the direction.  When it is coming from NW the cape protects the corner where we launch.  Our secondary swell and wind were coming from SW so we got the full force.

I ended up catching about 10 rockfish including one yellow tail.  I kept six hoping for a cabezon.  I got one keeper ling and a limit of crab.

With the weight of the fish and crab on the back of the boat I knew the landing was going to be ugly.  I tried backing in and made it to about three foot deep before I dumped over.  Luckily nothing was lost during that part.  With all the times I have fished PC, that was my first time dumping on the landing.

The two best times to fish is when it’s raining and when it ain’t. -Patrick McManus

Being retired, they pay me when I go fishing, therefore I am kind of a professional fisherman.

Anyone headed to PC or Depoe on Saturday or Sunday? I have the day off Saturday and could probably get Sunday off to. I'd like to go try again whether launching from PC(which is supposed to be calmer) or from Depoe. Either way I'd like to meet up with someone who can show me the ropes and fish with me a bit. I need to get out and wet a line. :banjo:

shark did u get a gps? what exactly are u going to do if the fog rolls in on u? hope its clear weather for u when u go. going out without a gps is sketchy to say the least. good thing u did not show at depoe as the fog came in and out a few times. imagine not being able to see 10-20 yds all around u. so u go with someone that has gps? what if u separate, can`t see each other when fogs in? redbeard i get ur drift. the parking lot is small at depoe and fishing sucks there.  i don`t know that i will ever go there again. i`d say pacific city is your best bet.

It's an odd feeling knowing that huge rock is so close to you, but you just can't see it! Makes it pretty tough to find a crab pot too!
I don't have a GPS yet, just a compass. I did use a gps app on my iPhone when we went out a few miles for halibut, it worked good. You can mark waypoints on it, track your trip, speed, pretty much everything a gps does. It was a free app, not anymore.

You don't need a GPS for fishing pacific city.  You don't need a lot of stuff that I see recommended on this site all the time.  The main thing you need is experience in self rescue (getting your ass back on the kayak). One item that I don't see recommended that really should be on anyone's kayak that is out there alone is a spare paddle.  Besides that, a whistle and proper flotation, nothing else is a necessity for a quick jump out to the rock for a few Blacks.  Obviously your kit needs to grow the further out you paddle, but people can get out there and get some fish in the yak without being $3000 into an outfit.  And these shorebreak waves can turn you out of your kayak, but if everything is stowed who cares?
