So while it is still fresh in our minds ...

I kind of liked the location and believe everyone else did too.  Would you support a derby at the same location next year?  If no, where would you propose?  If yes, same timeframe?  Or possibly earlier?  I heard mention that an earlier date that allowed salmon to be targeted in the salt would be appealing.

I think the location this year was nice.  The camping was close to the beach, protected from the wind, and the brew pub and mini-mart where very convenient.  I also think we lucked out on the weather and I'm guessing that the surf launch might not be so nice most years.  The only think I might suggest would be to consider a more protected launch like Depoe Bay (about 35 miles south of Pacific City, but only another 15-20 mins further from Portland).

I had a blast, and would gladly go again next year. same time or earlier would be fine. Depoe Bay is cool, too.

Like others, I thought the tourney had a lot of good things going for it. I really liked that you could fish rockies or salmon in that spot. It kind of brought up the strategy segment of it all. I also loved the 5PM weigh in. Every tourney should be like that. Pac City 2009.. hells yeah!

I'd like to second Brian's suggestion of a more protected spot like Depot or Sunset Bay.

I really enjoyed this years venue but if we hold it earlier in the year, there won't be a whole lot to fish for in the rivers should the ocean be un-cooperative.

I really liked the spot this year.  Most of days that you can get out of Depoe the surf at PC is fine too, plus much less boat traffic.  If earlier, ocean salmon is a possibility, BUT, who knows what they will do with the seasons year to year, could be open, could be closed who knows?  Salmon river estuary is another option. Small bay, just south of PC, if surf cooperates bottom fish just offshore (not as good as PC or other places like Depoe, but I have caught some decent fish in the past), salmon in the bay, protected from north winds by cascade head, few to no powerboats.
Pole perhaps and early summer scouting trip would be in order?? halibut prospecting?? ;D

I really enjoyed fishing Pacific City. The RV park was really nice and also very close to the launch. It might be a benefit to everyone that tent camped at the county park, to think about reserving spaces together at the RV park. Hot showers and a nice pool, with huge hot tub, would be a great addition after a day of fishing. I think the weather thing is a gamble anywhere we decide to have the tournament. Late Sept. is always a good bet for decent weather on the coast. Beverly beach and Depoe Bay are also sites to look into. Of course there is also Sunset Bay, but it's quite a drive for those that live up north.

Dave,

I think I read that the RV park has a club house that can be reserved/rented.  Did you manage to take a look at it?

The guy at "the shop" said that there are some butts to be caught between the rock and the river in relatively shallow water.  Apparently there is a nice gravelly bar that they sometimes hang out on.

If relatively shallow means 150 feet or so, I'm all over it!!!  Fresh grilled hali is about as good as fish gets...

I think it is in that ballpark or shallower.  I didn't probe too much.  Basically he said go out from the rock a bit then south parallel to the beach.  You can troll one direction against the tide and fish for salmon, then drift back with the tide bouncing bottom for butts.    South from the rock is in the 70 foot range.  You have to go double the distance from the shore to the rock to get to the 100 foot range, and twice as far again to get to the 180 foot range.  It's all sand out there according to the charts and I don't see the gravel patch, perhaps too small to show up on the charts.  That's all the info I remember.   Zee, do you recall anything more?

I believe there's more sand further out from the reef but you pretty much summed it up. A ways to go. That Hali carcass in the garbage can at camp was he~uuuge so some action to be had.
