Just thinking outloud ... I can't believe we don't know of a kayak fishing spot on the Oregon coast that has a decent chance of putting out a 10+ pound ling as a derby winner.  Anyone???   ???

-Allen

From my drives down the coast, over the years, I'm pretty sure our crew has only scratched the surface of what's available. There are a lot of little parks along 101, lots of little coves that are far from any PB port. It's just going to take time for the exploration to happen.

It would be great to have an event in some un-known little cove far away from PB ports.  Unfortunately, a lot of those coves don't have much in the way of group camping access.

Those spots are around, for sure!    Think structure that the charters/commies can't,or don't, fish... wether it be distance from port or conditions not safe for boats etc.   If it is hit by the pukers or smaller powerboats the big lings get sucked up.  A map and some local knowledge is your best friend.  I have two spots on the north coast that have fish like that.

I've caught 10 lbs ling out of Sunset. I know others have also. This ling grabbed the greenling as I was reeling it in. There are a lot of spots to try after launching from Sunset. Lots of structure & coves both north & south. Sunset also has a State campground. Some other ones nearby also. Anyone who wants to check it out, pm me. We'll make arrangements.

I agree with PNW. Definetly 10 pound plus lings out here. Especially down toward Simpsons reef and the south cove. It's only a couple miles to simpsons from sunset.

There is a ton of area i haven't even dropped a line in yet.
See ya on the water..

Not saying you can't catch a 10 pounder out of Sunset, but from the reports here, the catch of lingcod per unit effort isn't that high.

How about Ecola State Park area?

I know there isn't a campground in the immediate area, but just up the highway towards Seaside there is a grass campground on the West side of 101/26 called Circle Creek RV park.  They have RV and tent sites. Kinda spendy, but doable, especially if you buddy up on tents.

Then then is Oswald West State Park. Which does have tent camping, and nice secluded beach that PB won't be near.  May have to deal with surfers, but that's cool. There is a bit of hike down to the camp ground, but with a cart under the kayak it shouldn't be too much of an issue. By the Google map, it looks like there are several little coves, North and South of the OW beach.

Ecola State Park is day use only, but has at least a couple launch potentials (on either side of Tillamook Head), protected from different exposures.

Oswald West is nice, but open to the SW/W. Good protection from the NW. Best fishing is to the N. First come/ first served at the campground; looks to be really tough for summer weekends.

Nehalem Bay State Park is south a little ways (near Manzanita), but between Cannon Beach (Ecola) and Tillamook. Big park, takes reservations, and has yurts. Exposed ocean beach on one side, bay on the other. Nice for families.

For the June/July period I would consider sturgies in the Columbia estuary. That's the best time of the year in that area and I've heard of people having multiple fish days. Fort Stevens State Park is huge, takes reservations, and has yurts.

Oswald West is closed for camping now - some really big trees came down in the campgrounds.

It would be great if we could get permission to drive down the beach all the way to the south side of Cape Lookout and camp out somewhere there.

Missed the PC derby last year , hopefully we can set a date soon to mark on our calendars. Not sure about everyone else, but my summer weekends are filling up fast, the location isn't as important to me now as the date and making sure I don't plan something on that weekend I can't get out of. ;D
