I don’t find that argument convincing without some quantification.

I also think it’s fair to weight different lives different in the calculus. The suicide of a 20 year old with a life expectancy off another 60 years is certainly worth more than the septuagenarian with a life expectancy of 6 years. Is it 10:1?  Is this calculus not socially acceptable or politically correct?  It’s certainly worth considering.

Personally I find the analysis of whose years of life are worth more abhorrent.  However, it is required in a system where the hospitals are literally completely overwhelmed because what else are ya gonna do? This was actually the case a mere few weeks ago in Italy.
“If a patient has a low likelihood to benefit from the hospital, we have to not accept them. You send them home.” He added, “This is also what I am seeing every day.”
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/23/world/europe/italy-coronavirus-hospitals.html

But when we're talking about that same analysis in an absence of that, which may or may not be a reality in New York City, to me it feels like who is an acceptable sacrifice for the sake of the economy.  And, well, if you're comfortable making that analysis, then let's just say I wouldn't vote for you.

Luck for us, Vox has an article for this exact discussion we're having. I'm not an expert in economic policy, but here's a quote from someone who is:

"The true choice, Furman argues, is this: You can suppress the virus now and deal with a terrible economy six months from now, or you can wait two more months to suppress the virus, find yourself forced into yet more extreme quarantine measures because the virus is pervasive and the death toll overwhelming, and find yourself in an even more horrendous economy on the other side."

I have also studied economics and law and while my career path is t quite the same as Jason Furman‘s he is a well respected liberal Keynesian economist.

He’s made the same assumptions that you have made, ones that I’m not willing to make, and I don’t think you should vote for me either.

The cool thing about threads you don't like is that you're completely free to ignore them.

Cheers!

And hang on, how is this a circle-jerk thread? It doesn't seem like we're stroking each others egos about how much we agree on something. I certainly don't feel like I'm getting pleasured in this discussion. If this is, in fact, a circle-jerk thread then we must be pretty masochistic.

I WILL CONTINUE TO FISH..

I will also shoot the deer in my front yard if I have too... without asking permission from above.

Nobody is asking anybody to stop fishing - you are asked to fish & hunt only your local area. Local as possible. In your front yard is perfect  :)

Sounds like you don't understand the term 'circle jerk'... Don't lose that innocence, man!
