If my newbie and I lose, here's what we'll provide to the winning team. We'll wash down all your gear and fetch you a beer whenever you snap your fingers for the rest of the night.  Ummm ... I'll wash down all your gear and the newbie will fetch you and me a beer whenever you snap your fingers for the rest of the night.

OK PP (paddler not pole) what say we adopt Allens prize definition, keep the fish cleaning and drop the G-Strings?  Umm, so to speak.,,,,

Oh ... I was just offering up something different than you all.  Spot has the g's covered.  PelPad has the fish cleaning.  I have the gear cleaning covered.

So ... who are our victims?

How will you determine 'newbie' status?

This is a very important question.  I have less than a year fishin' salt from a 'yak.  I've never fished in Oregon.  Never surf launched.  Would I label myself a newb?  No.  Would I love to play on a team?  Yes.  A definition of "newb" would be helpful.

Point taken Allen.  I guess I was still thinking of it as a closed bet between PP and me.  I'll try to formalize the payoff rules later.

The Yak Monkey makes a good point.  How 'bout we take names of people who would like to persue the 'Newbie' slots.  While we're at it, let's get the names of those who would like to join as 'Salts' (and what they're willing to bet.  I'll start a new thread just for team sign ups so we can make gathering the data easier.

If you joined this site in 2009, I would think you are a newbie.  "We" reserve the right to determine who is and who isn't a newbie and who can actually qualify for this offer.  I'm not taking a 108 year old lady out just because she is a newbie ... get my drift?  Spot, PP, and I will vote on it.

I'm not sure I see too many newbies currently signed up for this derby.  If you're a newbie and are on the fence about it, this is a great opportunity you surely don't want to pass up.

I've added a "Newbie/Salt" column to the roll call at the beginning of this thread.  I entered what I believe are the obvious newbies and salts.  If you wish to be classified as either, make your case here.

Cool!  Brian, please kill the thread that I started on this subject.

Thanks!

Oh yeah, let me add that if only two "qualified" newbs step up, then the bet reverts to Palegic and myself measuring equipement via newb abuse.   >:D

Sorry Mark, I guess I didn't see that post.  Although it seems you did mention that you would.\

Anyway, you can keep the other thread going or let it die out.

You survived ORC 2008  :icon_thumleft:, I think that makes you an OG Salty Dog of the highest order.   Can we call you Ishmael?   :icon_pirat:
Anyway, is that a request to be labeled as a newbie?

You fished?  I thought you just donated your rod to Davey Jones' locker then floated around all day?

Brian, you can label me either way I suppose,  Newb or Salt.

I've been in the salt a total of 5 times now (all this year) and have finally successfully landed on the beach without crashing or floating off the yak.  I'm up to something like 25 rockfish/lings caught while on the yak.  Not all were keepers though, several too small, and a few even escaped me before I could get them on the lip grip, or in the bag.

On the other hand, I'd say I still have ALOT more to learn, and by no means anywhere near solid enough to be a 1 on 1 coach out there for ocean kayaking, as well as the fishing aspect of it.

Maybe we could break down the ranks a bit more:

Salt Virgin Newbie
= Never been in the ocean via kayak period.
Experienced Newbie = Limited times on the ocean via kayak, limited experience paddling, fishing, etc.
Salt = Many, many times on the salt, comfortable with most aspects of ocean kayak fishing.
Extreme Salt = Way up there in experience of ocean kayaking, fishing, and paddling, with a comfort level beyond the average.

Hey, I caught a cabezon before the donation! The bass fishing worm I caught it off of, and the subsequent donation further qualifies me as a newbie, doesn't it?

Ishmael? Sure, you can call me that, especially if I get to carry a harpoon. Arghh!

If you think you're a newb, stand up and be counted.  We'll sort thru the the list of available and make the call on who gets abused.

BTW:  I plan on making my newb work their @$$ off.   >:D  I tend to be the run and gun type till I find the honey hole and the playing field is huge at Depoe.

Spot... just to be clear.. I don't think your newb is intended to work for you as your personal rod caddy.

Spot:  What's the lie like on this next hole?

Newb:  The fish finder is reading about 75 ft deep, with a 30% grade slope towards shore.  Would you like your 15-30 ugly stick?

Spot:  No, no.. pass me my large spinning rod, a 6 oz jig head and an octopus tentacle.

Newb:  Your rod Sir.. [hands over rod and tackle]

[a few minutes later]

Spot:   Fish on!!!  and it's a nice one too!  Wo-ho!!!

Newb:  Nice job Sir, shall I sharpen the gaff?

[15 sec later]

Spot:   Ah @#$@$, it broke off.  [throws his rod in the ocean]

Newb:  Here's a new rod Sir.  Let's, just between you and me, call that one a mulligan, shall we?.

Spot:   Mulligan my a$$, @#!%$  Newb!!    Go fetch my rod!
