I found myself using a 40# mono this past weekend, and couldn't get an improved clinch to hold. line was to stiff and thick and wouldn't bite.

2 snaggs = 2 buzz bombs sliding off the line when the knots failed.

I've never used any other knot as the clinch has always worked for me, but what do you guys use? or what knot would help?

the 40# line is my leader, and it's tied via hardware to 5mm climbing rope....so tying bumpers isn't really an option.

I've used florocarbon and it's better for the knots, but doesn't have the stretch that mono has that I need for the handline.

any ideas?

I've found the San Diego Jam knot works really well for 40# test and up. It looks pretty cool too!
Make sure you practice that one a bit before needing to tie it while out on the water. (I guess that goes for any new knot that one learns though)

The improved clinch is a tough one on bigger test. Uni's are good for everything but one I've really grown to like is the Trilene. It's really similar to the clinch series and I really like that the mainline wraps the lure eye twice. Quick, easy to tie, and strong.

The palomar knot is a real tough one to beat if you can get the line through the eye of the hook twice. That's how we tied flipping jigs on 20+ lb line when we were trying to drag lunker bass out of flooded timber and weeds back in FL.

+1 on the thick stuff.  Fast, simple and strong.

Me too,

I really wanted to use the palomar with mono as it's really easy to tie even with numb or gloved fingers. It might be a bit of a challenge getting through the eye twice using #40 mono, but didn't kallitype test it a while back and found it lacking (with mono)?

Palomar is my go-to knot too.  I've not tied it on 40#, but have tied it on 30#.

Palomar is my go-to knot too.  I've not tied it on 40#, but have tied it on 30#.

I've used palomar on mono up to 130.  No problems.
I've used uni on mono up to 130.  No problems.  3-turn uni on 80# and above.  5 turn uni on 30# and below.  4 turn in between.

You can't always easily use palomar on all knots (think both sides of a swivel), so having another knot in your arsenal is good.

Thanks guys. Looks like I'll have to learn palomar and uni. I think I'll downsize to 30# mono as well. I don't think the buzz bomb was fluttering on the drop like it should....Maybe florocarbon's small diameter would help with that also??

I second the Trilene knot for mono in the lighter-medium test range. This is a nearly 100% knot. I use it to tie to swivels, sinkers, flashers, trolling rudders, heavier lures, large bait hooks, or any lure where it won't hurt the action (it creates a stiff connection). I don't use it on flies.

I just bought some 15# power pro (braid) to put on my surf perch reel. Might go get some 10# to use on a smaller reel, too.  Don't want any "line stretch" in the surf. Never used the new braided lines before. I'll need some new nippers for cutting it. I'm in the habit of biting off my mono.
Now that I know its a good knot for braid, I'll use that Palomar knot to tie onto my swivel. Mono or floro leader below that, connected to the swivel with a Trilene knot..

Thanks, guys!
