That's a beauty of a boat HBH. If you're gonna stash your yak aboard and have room for another I'd love to give it a shot.

I'll also be heading up from Orcas, but will be leaving the day before, setting up camp, and hangin' out.  Fishin' to commence as early as possible on the 1st.  Gimme a heads up, Jason, and we can carpool it.  My truck can easily handle a couple boats, and is set up to handle mine nicely.  We can split the cost of a tent site as well.

I'm totally down with splitting gas & campsite. that makes it much more doable. Just let me know of your exact plans and I'll work my schedule around it.

Someday I'd like to fish that area.  Looks like it could be a nice place to check out sometime.  The green color of that ling is cool too.  Nice fish!  Good Luck guys, and post some fish pics.  Looking forward to hearing about the trip.

Even though OR is open year round and the sound/strait is only open for a month I'd still say the rock fishing in OR is better. For the sights it may be a tie.

I agree. all the rockfish I've got in the SJ's are super tiny.

Brian, how far is the paddle from Orcas?  I remember it didn't look too far, but distance can be deceiving on the water.  At least this year I have some idea what I need to expect $$ and gear wise.

it's less than 3 miles from Orcas (N Beach to Sucia) closer to two.

It can be a super easy paddle if you work the current/wind to your favor. It can be fairly dicey if you don't.

So a guy could drive to Orcas then paddle 2 ish miles to Sucia and yak camp while fishing for lings?

It is true. Don't tell anyone. I'd check the chart to confirm, but as I remember it, it's 2 and change.
