my wife chastised me for removing the manufacturers decals from the side of the boat...what kind of kayak are we playing for????  ;D

well, if it's one of the ones that he usually talks about, it's a Nigel Foster designed Valley of one model or the other....

Sad-ish news on my end  :-\  Looks like my plan to head to Sucia on the opener is toasted.  Plus side is that my new "little brother" is on a soccer team that is whompin' the competition, and I am responsible for sideline encouragement.  I will be trying to make it out to the islands early in the month, but the weekend of the 1st is a no go.  :embarassed:

So, to any and all headed out then, I wish you fair winds, following seas and Lingzilla's all around!

ha ha ha. I'm only snickering at your Nigel Foster Valley because I'm the only dork who would catch it. I guess on your end, you'd be right more often than not if you said a British kayak name designed by a guy named Nigel. I'm pretty sure all Brit kayakers are named Nigel.

am glad you did.  was using that mans name as you guessed, a general reference..... btw, why are the limeys so obsessed with the greenland style boats???

It's a long story, and misplaced here, but a Scottish grad student went to Greenland in the early 50's and brought back a greenland skin on frame. It was at that point modern kayaking as we know it was born. The Valley Anus Acuta is a FG exact copy of that greenland boat, and it's still in production today. Valley was the first manufacturer of modern sea kayaks.

The Valley Nordkapp was designed shortly there after for rounding Cape Horn....and on and on.

Bummer Yak Monkey.  Hope you get out there soon.

So I know a couple of you will be arriving on the Nigel Foster, sans decal, day tripper express, which is good because I'm sure I owe HBH a scotch on the rocks that we never got to have last year (because of the big storm that kept you busy fending off that sailboat, remember?  I still miss that Hobie paddle.)  Y'all should consider staying the night if you can.  Big color (my dad) and I will be there again too.  Anyone else still planning on making the run up from Orcas?  If so, let us know your float plan so we can keep an eye out for you.

I'm heading to Sucia, but I'll be fishing off my friend's boat (just call me Benedict Arnold!).  I'll be looking out for you guys though.  Being fairly new-ish to ling fishing we are planning on using large Berkeley Saltwater Gulp curly tails with big lead jig heads, and also trying some large herring.  Does that sound about right or is there something else we should try?  or is it a secret? ;)

Glad to hear it tall man.  Nothing wrong with fishing from a PB.  And nothing secret about lings.  That's why I like to fish for them.  I think with lings its the action more than the bait.  I've seen them caught on just about everything.  Just keep it moving, lively and annoying to them.  Ring the dinner bell as Z says.  I like heavy jigs because I can really bang the bottom and create a ruckus.  Dragging herring around works well to, just expect to snag fairly often.  Have fun and say hello if you see a yellow Hobie (or two.)

I'm headed to Jones Island May 5-9, probably won't see you guys as I'll be 12 miles SSW. If I get tired of catching fish maybe I'll paddle up that way and see who I run into. I'll be in a red/gray sea kayak w/ black dry suit, yellow pfd. Girlfriend in a white sea kayak.

I don't want to diminish the importance of Mr. robot NOAA radio guy, but in my experience, that's what the forecast is everyday up there. Just keep an eye out for when the current apposes the wind. Less than 15mph is about as good as it gets.
