How well do we trust coolers being left in the trailer while out fishing?  :-\

I'm sure I can accomodate a few coolers in my rig or we can strap them to my roof while we are on the water.  I don't think many people would be willing to put in the effort to climb on my roof to snatch a cooler.

Is there a "sweet spot" time that we could try and avoid the ramp traffic?  Sunrise on the 19th is 5:29am.  I usually don't eat much of a breakfast, so I'd love to go straight to the launch just before first light and be ready to launch between 5:30-5:45.

Not really, as the other folks using the ramp will be PB Halibut fishermen with a similar goal of getting out on the water early and avoiding the crowds.

My plan looks very similar to yours... Get there early, offload, find a place to park, get out of everyones way and rig up, then head out at first light.  If the seas are calm and the PB halibut folks are there in traditional numbers I can promise it won't be a boring place to hang out.

Wonder if we could tag behind a hali boat going out?  Let them clear the way.

On second thought......the diesel exhaust may very well do me in before I get out of the harbor.  :puke:

I haven't followed someone out of DB before, but I did follow a boat in once.  I didn't have VHF at the time and they weren't happy with my sudden appearance behind the return (RoW) vessel.  He had a few words for me, that I couldn't hear through one of my choice left fingers.

(for the record, it's really not like he was waiting for me. there was plenty of room, and i had cleared before he even moved like he was heading out.)

So the quotas have been updated and it looks like the crummy weather kept a lot of halibut fishermen off the ocean last weekend.  The quota is now at 40% remaining.  This means that the 17th through the 19th of June WILL be an all depth halibut weekend.

I figured as much. YUP, why did you launch where you did on your last trip out of Depoe? was the ramp crowded? Looks like a good spot for the Kayakers to launch to avoid the ramp.

It wasn't that the ramp was crowded, I just don't like getting any stink eye from the PB'ers. There was just enough traffic that day though where I would have probably got in someone's way. It's not a very big ramp; only enough room for two average sized trailers at a time.

Gotcha, that's one of the things i like, getting in the PB'ers way... ;)

Charleston launch is nice though, you can launch at least 5 boats at a time so the PB'ers only get slightly miffed.. :-*

So, Do you use the Newport correction/tide for Depoe bay tides? High tide is around 6:34 AM ?

If I'm paying the same launch fee the powerboaters are, they can kiss my :pottytrain2:

it kind of sucks, because "that spot" is right next to the ramp on the far side. From the parking area you have to haul your gear through/across the back down and staging area. We'll still get stink eye, but it's all we can do. Looks like the tide will be up at launch so there won't be that much area exposed.

Just a quick note regarding Halibut, Ramp Pressure and Yak Flags.

The rule that's been posted here is for Pacific Halibut, not California's (which you can catch and retain).  Newport is the preferred launch for halibut sport fishermen since the fishing grounds are Southwest of there.  Depoe Bay adds another hour to the grounds.

The kind of pressure we MAY see (it hasn't been heavy the last few weeks) is for salmon which just aren't around yet.  There will be 1/2 dozen boats looking for those and maybe a dozen looking for rockfish which is what most of the charters will be focusing on.

Depoe Bay has asked we use flags on our yaks so the bigger boats can see us.  They say they've been really helpful and they appreciate it when we do (so I bought one yesterday @ Bi-Mart for under $15).

PS: I've never got any crap from the PB's.  They'll just stare in amazement and you'll occasionally hear "those guys are FN crazy"

You may be right but I think I'm going try to launch at the same time as Lee just in case punches get thrown  ;D

I really appreciate you bringing this topic back to reality Sniffer!!  In reality, 99% of my interactions with PB'ers have been 100% friendly.  There are a-holes in every group but for the most part, we're viewed as serious, hard-core fishermen.

Guys, a bike flag from your local Fred Meyer or Sports Authority is a cheap investment in your long term safety.  I always fly one when fishing areas where PB'ers may need some advanced warning of my presence.

Trust me, even the ones who are yelling at you suddenly become reasonable when you paddle right up to them and talk civilly.

Most people are pretty reasonable.  I find saltwater fisherman are more hospitable than river types.  The only jockying I really see is between cars to get to the launch in most places.

I either get a "man that's cool" or a snicker (which turns to a gasp if I'm coming in and just happen to show my stringer... obviously not intentional!  lol)

At any rate, I think you guys are worrying too much about the launch.  Focus on wishing for good weather!

Will there be any NWKA stickers or safety flags available?
