Just found out I've got a hall pass for Saturday and may hit Depoe Bay super early.  I'll probably stick close to shore for my rockfish AOTY points.

I can't tell for sure from this thread where you all decided to launch from.  Depoe?  Or elsewhere?

I just bought bait, I'd like in on this one. Anybody want to launch a little earlier? Some of the other boards I've browsed said whatever/what little action they had came early. We can all hook up on Ch. 69 on the outside.

Dana and I are gonna try to be there at 7AM so we can launch a little earlier. See ya at the launch at 7AM LB?

Let's pump the excitement level up a bit.  Caught last weekend.  Care to guess the size?

looking good, just got down here,  got lots of bait (some to share), got squid, herring, and a whole octopi from the fish market! If the hali's don't eat it I will! Yeah around 7 CBY and Yaksurf.

REPORT:

I'm not going to start a separate thread because it was a pretty uneventful day for us. No fish. CBY & YakSurf and I headed out of the hole and we decided we would paddle for an hour straight. We headed due west and slightly to the north so the current wouldn't pull us too far south to make getting back a pita.

I think we started fishing around 44 48 50, -124 07 84, out pretty close to three miles I think and the current pulled us to the SW.

We were in close to 200 feet of water and the bottom was flat as a pancake. 16 ounces of lead was plenty to keep the line nice and vertical. I had a variety of bait, herring, squid and an octopi I picked up at Uwajimaya. CBY and YakSurf both had some herring come back up with nice clean bites. I did get a little excitement when I hooked a nice size skate, he vacuumed up my octopus arm, and the circle hook had him good. Was a good fight. I saw the white belly and thought I was business until I saw the wings.  :(

We stopped on the way back and tried for some bottom fish but the bite switch was in the off position. YakSurf CnRed a couple of nice cabs that was about it I think. It was a great day (could have done without the fog, but not too poor vis) and it was good experience being that far out. I will most definitely be trying it again.

BTW - DeepColor how did you do on the bottom fish, forgot to mention he launched with us, and it was nice to meet ya. :)

It was great to meet you guys.  I was waaaay more comfortable launching with folks who had run the cut at Depoe a few times before.

My story begins last Thursday night.  My fam was out of town for a couple of days and magicseaweed.com told me it was a good idea to fish the salt on Saturday.  I had the yak on the car early Friday evening, too early, so why not try for some smallmouth on the Willy as a warm up?

As soon as I launched, I spied another fishing kayaker.  Here is a shortened version of the conversation we had:

DC:  "Hey.  Are you NWKA?"
Jammer:  "Yep.  Jammer's my handle."
DC:  "Nice.  I'm Deepcolor.  Let's fish."
Jammer:  "You know the guy who caught that big sturgy here?  The picture that Spot took?"
DC:  "Yep.  That's me."
Jammer:  "Nice."
DC:  "You fish the Rockfish Classic?"
Jammer:  "Yep.  I won it."
DC:  "Nice."
DC:  "I think I'll head down there tomorrow."
Jammer:  "Fish just south of the red bouy.  Close enough to hear the sea lions on it."
DC:  "Thanks."

Fast forward to the four of us powering through the channel and the fog yesterday.  I peeled off with wishes of barn doors in their future.  All I wanted was a simple rockfish.  On my first drop in Jammer's spot, I brought up a very small Irish Lord, and made the mistake of thinking I'd get a better rockfish for my AOTY points.  No picture.  No measure.  I proceeded to nail two lings, 26" plus, and two big cabbies, which don't count anymore based on non-retention rule changes.  Plus a small ling to boot.  But no more rocks.

But this was a day the AOTY didn't matter much.  I had a blast meeting some good fisherman and hanging out on the ocean catching big fish...hearing the eerie bell of the red bouy, and watching fog banks come and go.  Good times.

DC.

Good report LB. It was nice fishing with you and meeting Deepcolor. What a day, kind of a tough one. I woke up at 3:30 am, got to Depoe Bay at 6:30, unloaded my yak and realized my paddle had popped off the side of my yak and fell out the back of my truck...Thankfully LB had an extra for emergency but never needed one. We launched at 7:45.

we pedaddled out to the red can with DC, Said our good lucks, then continued on or way an hour out. Like LB said, 200 feet of water, flat as a board. I got a herring bit right on half without the fish getting the treble hook that was at the tail.. :'( I gave it a while to come back for the rest but nothin.

I got a short vid of LB's skate, after he had it landed.

After three hours we headed back in to fish shallow, that was a slog, i turned and burned, my knees were aching when i got back in. The bite was way off. All i got was two sculpins and had a bunch of tailbiters..

we headed in about 3pm, So 7+ hours on the water and so little to show for it. I got home about 7:30 to my Paddle sitting on the front porch, it fell out in the drive way luckily and Ralph picked it up..

It was a great experience,  and can't wait to do that some more, wonder if there is gonna be another two days of Hali season?

Was so far away when LB caught it didn't get any bendo action..

Enveloped in white before getting close to the red can..

See ya on the water..

I'm sitting here stewing about not one of us catching a butt..... :(

If there is another two days of season i gotta go out again. Probably will stop at Depoe Bay on the way up to Young's Bay and fish friday way early this time, right at first light, conditions permitting.

Anyone?..
