Craig, As a frequent chummer here is my advice.
1. try every remedy no matter how weird it sounds because it may work.
2. eat soft food before you go because it hurts less on the way out.
3. don't take pictures when you are on the water.
4. pre-tie as many rigs as you can before you go and use snaps so you you can replace lures easily.
5. tobacco does not help. I almost booted on the Willamette and I tend to catch less fish after putting in a plug.
6. Catch fish as adrenaline is the best cure around.
7.  Have fun, the salt is great time.

Ndogg,

Thanks for the advice.  Also,  I was unable to find a game clip locally.  I was told  that they haven't really geared up for spear fishing season yet.  I think I will just order from Hook1.

Craig,
Order 2 of the bigger size (18 I think). When you get a few rockies strung up and then hook a big fish, it's nice to have a free and clear game clip to handle the big one with.

I hit the water at 8am, and Insayn, Craig, and DTS were shortly behind me. By the time they showed up, I had released 2 underlings, and lost something big. There was a slight east wind, and 4-6ft swells. About 10am, the ocean calmed down for about an hour and it was really nice. At 11:30am the north wind started, the swells came back up, so Craig and I decided to pack it in. Insayn and DTS stayed out for another 1/2 hour. All in all I ended up with a nice Cab, and a small Ling. I caught another nice cab and released it.  Craig got into the blacks, and ended up with 3 and a nice ling. Insayn landed a pig of a cabbie, and DTS caught a nice Ling at the very end. Another nice day on the salt!

The stomach was ok once I got used to it.  However,  when I caught my ling, I couldn't find my lip gripper.  By the time I looked in every hatch I was nauseous.  Not seeing the waves coming and not looking at distant stuff nearly did me in.  I did take a meclazine tablet before going out.  I had no side effects that I am aware of, unless slight nausea is one of them ;), so I may take two next time.

I had a blast, but have not had a chance to download pictures yet.  The half of the ling we ate tonight was delicious.

Thanks.  I have always wanted to get out to that, but have never made it.

Here are a few pictures from throughout the day.

My first ling ever:

The 18.5 inch rock fish
The 17.75 incher:

Insayn and Goldendog relaxing out on the water:

Insayn and DTS back at the launch with their cabezon and ling

DTS' Ling

And here is how colors appeared to me yesterday.  I made a mistake, and rather than getting meclazine for motion sickness, I inadvertently got mescaline.   That is the last time I buy drugs from an unlicensed street corner "pharmacist" in Portland.

Alrighty...my turn to add some color to the report.

Update on chumming.   No meds, no essential oils, no ginger on this trip.
I chummed 3 times, briefly and had nothing to do with big swells.  Weird!
The first time, I was trying to untangle my lip grip tether from the carabiner on my water bottle. Not sure how the two joined?
Second I was just chatting with Goldendog in really mild swells and just lost it.  Again...weird?  Wait for the picture, I'm sure Golden will post it eventually.   :-\
Third, I was releasing an UnderLing in some chop, and gave a lite chum.

Note: Subway sandwich's are chum friendly food!  Actually tastes good in reverse.  Whoooda thunk?

Beautiful morning!

Craig setting up camera's.

Looking back at the sea wall.

Around 9:15, the ocean laid down.

Short clip.

One of two Under Lings for me.

Free bait from the above pictured Ling.  He chummed them into my lap!

Goldendog and his Cabby.

Craig floating around.

On our way back in we had some traffic at the entrance.  Some miscommunication between two charter boats.  The Harbormaster, heard us called our intentions, but one charter told the other to come out anyways. We had to turn around right at the break wall and scoot out of way of that boat's wake.  It got crazy sloppy, but the Revo felt very stable.  My neck was a little sore this morning from the whipping back and forth due to the close chop.

Here's the clip from that whole reentry.

Back at the ramp, we did a quick photoshoot of each others catch of the day.

Goldendog and myself comparing Cabbies.

DTS and his 27" Ling and first ocean caught fish on his kayak.  Way to go bro!

My 27.25" Fat Fatty Fat cabby.

Only one pincher, and one small crab in her gut, and 1.5 pounds of eggs she had brewing!
Is there any use for Cabby eggs?   I know they're toxic to humans, but would they cure up and be any good for other bait?

Man there is a lot of meat on that cabby.  Recovered 4 pounds of blue/green meat aiming for fish taco's tonight.

While poking around the head, it looks like you could just season it and roast the damn thing and get a meal out of all the meat from the head alone.

Craig, nice job of psycodelisizing me. Brings back many fond memories from the seventies!

It was a lot of fun fishing with everyone.  Great job capturing the day in photos.  Lets do it again sometime!
