Netting is a skill I desperately need to practice. Of course to practice requires a fish on the hook, another skill I'm lacking. Seems my only strength is keeping a big smile just being on the water. Things could be worse.

I trolled herring behind a flasher from Oregon City down to Sellwood Pk. yesterday. Didn't see that many caught, except as I was quickly paddling past the combat fishery at OC. I hooked one right north of Elk Rock Island while I was paddling downstream into a massive headwind. It was my first salmon from the yak and the netting process I botched severely. The lead got twisted in the net on the first attempt which caused my leader to snap. I wanted to roll myself headfirst into the river. Anyway if I can hook one on my second try without sonar or any common sense, I think anyone can. Actually netting one would really be a bonus.
Congrats on hookup,so sorry for your loss :P You'll get em next time! :D The netting process is the one advantage PB'ers have over us! Seems as though you need to fight them long enough to make netting manageable but not so long as to feed the sea lions. I'm glad no one was videotaping my netting debacles! ;D

Sorry to hear about the netting. My first attempt was a total disaster. The second attempt went perfectly. Just takes practice, a good plan, and a little luck :)

I saw you as you went past George Rogers yesterday. I was anchored up sturgeon fishing. I gave a waive, white hobie. Keep at it. It will pay off with time.

thanks for your support. I think my main netting problem was that I didn't play the fish long enough. I fished below the falls on a sled on Thursday and playing the fish wasn't an option then. It was all about landing it before the big fur-bags could get to it first. When I was in my kayak at Elk Rock Is. there wasn't a sea-dog in sight, so I totally blew it. You guys are great and very supportive and I have learned mucho from this forum so thanks a bunch! I would have waved back Noah, but I was paddlin/trolling  and you were fighting a sturgo. Good job and I am becoming more envious of you high-rollers in your Hobies all the time.

It's not the yak that hooks fish.

I remember Spot being surrounded by a fleet of Hobies (me included) and catching two about a month ago during his on the water class.  Other than Ndogg paddlers were the only ones that caught them.
