Thanks Dana.  Another question.  Of the 25 species on the AOTY list, how many are available to you Southern Oregonians?  I suppose I'd like the same info for all the regions.  Hmm, what defines the "regions"?

I think we have a pretty good species lineup for 2013.  But always willing to file away some information for future events.

I think we have 19 of the 25 species.
Available species
1. Lingcod
2. rockfish
3. greenling
4. cabezon
5. surfperch
6. Halibut
7. Flounder
8. Chinook
9. Coho
10. Sturgeon - They are in some of the rivers down here but I don't know of anyone catching one from a kayak in southern Oregon.  CBY and I have put in countless days fishing for them on 3 different rivers down here without catching one.  I fished the Willamette at George rogers and caught one each day I fished (shakers).  So I'm not sure they should be counted.
11.  Steelhead
12. Cutthroat trout
13. Rainbow Trout
14. Small mouth bass
15.Largemouth bass
16. Panfish
17. Kokanee (High lakes hard for the coast guys)
18. Lake trout (High lakes hard for the coast guys)
19. Catfish

Species not available
1. Chum
2. Walleye
3. Sockeye
4. Pink Salmon
5. Dolly Varden/ Bull trout / arctic char
6. Grayling

As you can see for someone living in the Portland and Washington areas they will have Chum, Walleye, Sockeye?, Pink and sturgeon species to target in addition to the species we can target down here.

I dunno.  19 out of 25 species hardly seems like the short end of the stick, especially when you can only enter 10 species.  Just saying ...

If he thinks thats the short end....which end did we have last year in AK?  I think we only had 10 or 11 for our area.  Thanks again for the new additions.

We aim to please.  Would really like to try to make sure no one thinks they have the short end of the stick ... keeping in mind our range is vast.  But also remember, we will have state divisions this year, so at least you can compare against people with similar sticks!

Great... Now everyone can compare sticks too?

For PDX/NW Oregon anglers the only fish we have that you wouldn't (unless we went out of state) is Walleye and maybe the dwarf Columbia sockeye

I like the changes that you guys are making.  I think the addition of the species is good and will help even out things for the guys in the east and Alaska.  I do feel those of us that live in southern Oregon are getting the short end of the stick because we don't have the sockeye and pink runs.  I would strongly encourage you to look at adding stripers to the list to balance things out.

Puget Sound folks, which is where the majority of WA members live, have to drive 2-5 hours just to get to bottom fish, and they are only open March/April to October, and closed early this year.  Getting to decent sized bass or trout also requires a lengthy drive unless you get really lucky.  Sturgeon are in short supply and catch is restricted off of Columbia river data, Walleye are several hours away, the nearest lake trout are 2+ hours away, and there is really only one lake we can fish for sockeye this side of the mountains.  From where I'm sitting, you guys have a big advantage over us.

We could argue this all day. WA has all the salmon options, OR has the better bass fishing, AK has massive fish, etc. We're all very lucky to live in the beautiful PAC NW and have many incredible bodies of water.

I can't wait to hit the water in 2013!

  Well said ---and I agree.....
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Hop,

Not to imply that racing the TI around won't be a kick. (Watching the video has given me some ideas. We will talk later!) You will always have the use of the Revo for your AOTY endeavors. That is, as long as you remember to bring your camera!

Thanks, Steve, it's been too long since we fished together. January is not looking good for me, after the Portland Boat Show next week I'm heading to CA to visit the kids for a week. Maybe after the 22nd.

Are you saying you don't have Walleye?   The columbia has a great walleye fishery.

He said they did have them.
