For another option check out the NRS Pilot and Copilot.

+1   I love mine - but I really want a titanium knife.  That Wenoka big squeeze looks pretty sweet.  About $70 on Ebay.

Love my Ti NRS Pilot. Best bottle opener I've ever had.  ;)
The release is easy to use, but not so easy to put it back until it's broken in a bit.

I sent off my Titanium Wenoka big squeeze with my Cuda when I sold it last week. Nice knife and I love the release on it. The only problem I had is that the belt clip is prone to breaking (seen it a ton). I also had to hone the edge significantly when it came out of the box.

Picked up a Wenoka "Squeeze" Titanium Tanto from Andy & Bax the other day. Just under $60 from them. Looks like it should be a good knife. Seems to be pretty secure in its sheath.

I recently bought the pilot, I do not like the sheath. It adds an extra movement that is unnecessary  and cumbersome.

My next effort.

I also bought http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001P4DJ6C/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00 as my primary blade.

I came across this at West Marine and picked one up.    Like others I have a conventional knife on the kayak but can see the need for something always on you and accessible should you need to cut a line or strap in an emergency.  It has a 24"  leash going from the blade to the sheath to avoid loss should it slip from your fingers.  When in the sheath / pouch it is very low profile so won't get in the way if needing to drag myself back into kayak.

I used to think that Bigfoot might exist. Then I saw the reality shows where they are looking for them.  Now I am certain they don't

I have purchased this knife and have it attached to my PFD at all times. I use it as much as I can in order to create that second nature feel incase of incident

I have been using that knife for years Rodney and it had served me well. Hasn't shown a bit if rust to date and the blunt end comes in handy at times.

There seems to be 2 schools of thought on this.  One is similar to yours where in you use it to remain familiar with it.  The other is to only use when an emergency necessitates lest you accidentally lose it, or dull it.

What are some of you other doing?  Hmm, this may be a thread jack, maybe I'll start a separate topic.

well, Y'all know I am all about ghetto.
I got a cheap scuba knife at scuba.com, $20 or so.
I straps to my thigh and is easy to get to, stays put, blunt tip, serrated edge area for cutting cords etc.
I use it for everything while wearing it, cutting bait, line cutting, making bait (mussels etc), hammer.....

If your list of uses included "tooth pick, shaving and nail clipper"  you would score major "Chuck Norris Points"    ;D ;D ;D

I never gave much thought to an emergency / PFD knife until reading this thread which has brought up some great points "no pun intended"
I am afraid that if I was using it for other fishing duties,  there would be the chance I set it down in the kayak.  I may have every intent to placing it back in it's sheath on my PDF but fear that is when something may happen and I am in the water needing it.

The blunt tip came out in the late 80's/early 90's.  The initial intent was to be used as a combination knife/prybar for abalone/rock scallops/other shellfish.  The safety aspect is fairly new to the best of my knowledge.  Been SCUBA cert since 1976 at age 12.

To answer Allen's question, I use my Gerber Rivermate as a rescue knife and to cut gills. It also has been successfully used to cut-plug herring.  I had tried using bait knives for the non-rescue functions, but kept loosing them.  Maybe if I had a scabbard on my PFD to put them in (like the RIvermate) I wouldn't loose them. ::)

Not picking on only Craig here, because I have seen several others make the same mistake:

You lose your knife when it lays around loose on the deck. Also, you use cord to secure things. Chord is a geometric term. Class over.
