My buddy actually got flipped in a rapid then told me his boots must have been really heavy because his life vest was just barely keeping him out of the water. About two hours later we were getting ready to put in again and he happened to look at the in side of his life vest.........it was only rated for up to 90 lbs.........he is from Powers  :banjo:    nuf said. I could not stop laughing for about five minutes (though it could have turned out really bad and not been so funny).

Any ways I am taking him out to fish the light house area (with an appropriate sized life vest) on Wednesday if the ocean does not get to bad. Its not looking great now, but the light house area is so protected that it should be ok. We are going to bring the crab cage just to see what turns up in that area. But this time we are crossing the sand bar. We don't need a repeat of last years (almost a year exactly) mess while trying to shoot the gap with Cris.

Ahh Powers, Nuff said exactly.. ;)

I haven't been through there since either, the outside betwen that single rock and the end is pretty fishy, so i go around there.
See ya on the water..

Well Travis has only been on a kayak twice now (which is what Chris had) so I am not taking any chances this time and we are just going to cross the sand bar.
Enjoy the ride!

Roy, I've wanted to ask ya what the alure was of shooting the gap.  It doesn't look too far to just go to the outside of the rocks.   :-\

Well I am not Roy, but I can give you a little in site. First off it is a short cut to the light house area/north side. The alternatives are paddling all the way around which is more time consuming or crossing the sand bar which is a pain for the mirage drive guys. Second, when the conditions are right (and provided you are at least semi experienced on a kayak) it is a fun little paddle. Something about paddling through a nature made channel is cool.
Enjoy the ride!

How deep is the channel?
More importantly.... is it fishy?  8)

The depth varies. I was a little preoccupied but it seems to me the area the Chris fell in had a nice hole about 50 feet deep. A lot of fish were showing on the fish finder that day in the channel but again fishing was a low priority last time I was there. The problem is the conditions have to be just right to even paddle through it let alone hang out and fish. One of these days I am going to give it a shot.
Enjoy the ride!

I didn't realize there was a deep hole in there, Of course it's right where the wash comes through the slot, so it would have to be real calm for that one spot it's mostly 10-20.

Never stopped to fish it yet, just wanted to get through to the other side, it's not very wide and i bet it's snaggy as hell.

I troll through there almost every time I make the crossing, especially the entry, mid-channel wash, & exit. I've landed lots of BRF & Kelp greenling as well as a few lings & cabs. I do it a lot 'cause there's fish, it's a significant shortcut, & I think it's fun. Although there can be a significant pucker factor in the wash area & north side on some days. Lost a knife there on one of those days. If the south side looks dicey, don't try it; the wash & north side will more than likely be worse. Not a good passage for the inexperienced except on very calm days.

Caught this ling piggybacking this greenling in the wash area.

There's another fairly exciting channel shortcut through the lighthouse rock. I've caught several lings there.

I know there are more that will most likely be coming. shaping up nicely, hopefully the conditions are as good or better then they were at Depoe.

I am taking 15% of the pot for administrative costs and have decided to donate that to the pay it forward paddle to benefit Joel "mooch" lotilla of NCKA.

We can do the potluck and awards ceremony like we did at Depoe. Eat first and then do the awards ceremony. There is a good sized picnic area right by the launch that i will get for us to use, and i can bring my BBQ and briquets, don't have a gas one. I will start to gather some fire wood for a fire in the evening.

Don't forget , i got room for many tents and vehicles on my property and all NWKA'rs are welcome here.

Look forward to seeing yo guys there!

On the prizes, what do yo guys think about having the pot and prize packages of ascending value and have the winners choose either the money in the pot or a prize package and then go in order of finish until the pot and prizes are gone? just a thought.

Roy, so far it looks like you've really got something good going here.

I like your idea of supporting Mooch, he'll appreciate it.   :icon_thumright:

For attendance, I'm pretty sure DTS will be there.  He's camping down at Bullards Beach and will be commuting up to play with us.

I'll be bringing down some hardwood firewood to help out with the party heat. And I'll pack you a special box of wood to make fish bonkers with at your leisure.

I'm also going to send Roy a couple of rodholders to do a mini-raffle for Mooch.  I'll leave it up to him to determine the entry.  I'll be sending a Scotty ORCA and a RAM Rev Tube.

If you don't know about Mooch, let's just say that he's one of the Godfathers of West Coast kayak fishing and a very good friend to us all.  He was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer and a bunch of us are rallying to help him in any way we can.  I'm touched that Roy thought of donating some of the proceeds.

Thanks Allen for the donation of a stack of stickers for the prize packs and also donating the rod holders for a mini-raffle for Mooch.

I am going to get a few other things together to use for the raffle as well
